6 HOURS CREDIT - Drawing and Watercolor Painting
REGENTS' PROFESSOR ROB ERDLE
11th year taking UNT groups since 1984
The University of North Texas, School of Visual Arts is inviting you to experience a spectacular first summer term in Switzerland by enrolling in its Art In Europe 2002 Program. Six credit hours will be offered in Beginning Painting and Drawing, taught by Regent’s Professor Rob Erdle. Professor Erdle has led group of painting students to Europe for 10 years, exploring the dynamics of working outside every day in the Swiss Alps in addition to viewing world-class contemporary collections.

The four-week expedition will depart from DFW on June 3rd, returning July 3rd. The group will have two bases, with the first being the central Alpine village of Interlaken and the next, Leysin, western site five-thousand feet above Lake Geneva. Participants will have a good taste of Swiss culture, it’s history and people.

Daily travel will be aboard the outstanding Swiss transportation system which includes – trains, boats, buses and trams. Inspiring daily on-location drawing and painting sites will be fused with a blend of culture and art, as the group passes through dynamic landscapes, architecturally historic cities and dazzling world-class art venues. On-location watercolor studies will be enlarged and developed in the studio at the second base.

The three hours of painting credit may be taken on two levels: Beginning painting or a Senior Studio. The three hours of drawing will fall under Senior Drawing or a special problems number, ideal for all majors and degree plans.

SUPPLY LIST – *APPROXIMATE RETAIL COSTS
*one may already have some of the supplies

If the group would like, we can have one of the local art supply stores make a group offer for the purchase of some of these supplies at a group discount, similar to the art kits. Our city fieldtrips to Bern and Basel from our Interlaken base will allow us time to explore art supply stores and some of these items can be purchased there with cash or credit card.

TOTAL PRICE TO PURCHASE ALL SUPPLIES -
$125

1. Paint: Transparent Watercolor - $25

1. Red (choose from one of the following): Cadmium Red; Cadmium Red Hue; Cadmium Red Deep Hue; Alizarin Crimson (Dark Red).
2. Burnt Sienna (Red-Brown)
3. French Ultramarine or Prussian or Winsor Blue
4. Hooker’s Green Deep (Dark Green)
5. New Gamboge or Cadmium Yellow Deep (Dark Yellow)
6. Paynes Gray (Blue-Gray (cool)) or Neutral Tint (warm)
7. Sepia (Dark Brown)
8. Yellow Ochre (Yellow-Brown)
9. Violet or Purple Lake
10. Ivory Black, Lamp Black or Blue Black
11. White-white gouache

2. Palette: $2

Something small. If you already have a small, white plastic
traveling watercolor palette, fine. Otherwise, I would suggest and use a small plastic box, such as a Tupper Ware sandwich container. This can be used to carry your paint tubes and then dumped out and used to hold paint water and the lid for a portable palette. The idea is to keep it light and simple. At the second base with more time and space, we will use some plastic plates for studio situation.

3. Brushes: $40

  1. One pointed brush, either a #9 through a #12 pointed brush or a mop brush for small shapes, lines and details. ( Numbers may vary by company.) mop natural haired $26

  2. 2A 1” flat brush with a squared end or 1” round-ended brush. Use of the squared-end will result in more geometric, controlled brush strokes. The round-ended brush will hold more water than the flat-ended brush and will make organic shapes. 1” flat, acrylic $11

4. Paper Options: $46

The class is going to create smaller daily on-location paintings as well as maintain a diary of notes, sketches and other 2-D found objects. The smaller paintings can either be made up of single sheets of paper torn down from larger sheets and at the same time creating a variety of weights and types of papers or the watercolor paper can be in a book or block format. The minimum number of small paintings will be 20 and an average good size is approximately 9” x 12”. Watercolor paper is available in 90 lb. and 140 lb., with surfaces: hot press (smooth); cold press (some texture); and rough. 5 sheets of #140 lb 2 $4.50 each= $22.50

The group is also going to be working on a total of 5 larger watercolors and drawings, approximately 22” x 28”.

OR

  1. Watercolor block - a variety of sizes can be used for watercolor sketches and as a portable sketching surface. The blocks are stacks of paper with a laminated edge. Each sheet can be peeled off when the painting is dry. $18
    OR
  2. . Watercolor book – various brands, surfaces and sizes, try to keep the bound watercolor papers the approximate sizes as the sketchbook/diary. $18
    OR
  3. Drawing/diary bound book- approximate 50 pages, 8 _” – 9” x 11 _” – 12” $14

5. Paper Support: $3

  1. Tube-(optional) used to roll-up the larger watercolor paper and carry either attached to your small pack or inside of the larger suitcase. The tube protects the paper from being damaged. When the paper is rolled up, the stiff roll could be simply put into the suitcase with some clothing packed around it for protection and support.

  2. Foamcore Board-For the smaller sheets of paper, I have taken two small pieces of foamcore, and cut them larger than my torn down sheets of paper, and taped it on one side and made my own holder and support for the sheets of paper. It keeps them stiff and not bent and is used for storage as well as painting support surface. I can hold the foamcore board on my lap and paint, supporting the wet paper. If one is working from a block, this would not be necessary, but it can function as a small, homemade portfolio even for finished pieces from the block.

6. Drawing Supplies: $5

  1. I simply use a UniBall fine tipped black pen that will not smear or bleed. Other graphic pens, graphite, colored pencils, etc. are fine. The drawing materials can vary for the book/diary and two larger drawings.

7. Other Supplies: $4

  1. Paper towels-take off the roll, and pack many of them in with the luggage. These can be used in painting cleanup, brush dabbing, for eating, etc., many uses when traveling!
  2. Camera (optional)
  3. Water bottle-important, water is good everywhere
  4. Pocket knife (optional) handy when traveling, pack in larger check-on luggage
  5. Plastic cloth or towel-Something is needed to sit on when working in damp conditions and to protect supplies. A piece of clear or colored plastic is a good suggestion to pack in the bottom of your pack or suitcase. I use the plastic to sit on when I am painting and also for protection from moisture. At the end of the trip, I just throw it out. This does not have to be large, but when folded up, it takes up very little room and it is light. On day trips, I put it in the bottom of my pack. A towel can function in the same capacity. The extra towel can have added uses as well. Certainly upon arrival in Interlaken, if one feels this item is necessary, there are several places to purchase either item without having to pack it from the home.
