EAST MEETS WEST

Workshop Theme
The primary focus of the workshop series will be to explore the blending of Eastern and Western philosophy of traditional and contemporary landscape watercolor painting through wet grounds, working dry into wet, modeling and classic glazing with various landscape images combined with cultural symbols.
Rob will speak about his experiences with the landscape and painting the landscape in the great American West, Europe and his multiple trips over the years in Asia. There will be a special guest during the second day of the workshop, Professor Zhang from the Suzhow Environmental Institute, Suzhow, China. He will show some of his pieces and demonstrate a classic Chinese watercolor painting. Rob will also address materials and process.

SUPPLIES
The supplies can vary greatly and one may even return from home the second day
with more fire power!
- PAINT The type of paints is totally open for the workshop, but a mix of transparent, semi-transparent and opaque water-soluble pigments are fine watercolors and gouache. Please bring white gouache & black ink.
- PAPER Three full sheets of watercolor paper and a few scraps of watercolor paper or block / tablet form are fine to experiment with. Surfaces should be cold-press, 140 lb. papers or even 90 lb. cold press paper surfaces are important In order to blend styles and technique. The papers can be stretched or unstretched..
- SKETCHING SUPPLIES Minimal: pencil or pen of your choice for compositional design work.
- OTHER STUDIO SUPPLIES Brushes (especially a pointed natural brush and an synthetic stiff brush), water container, palette, paper towels & anything else you are accustomed to using while painting.
- PLEASE BRING A FEW INTERESTING PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF LANDSCAPES, URBAN OR RURA, SKETCHES AND COMPOSTIONAL LANSCAPE DRAWINGS MAY ALSO BE BROUGHT. IT WILL HELP TO HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT SOME IDEAS TO WORK TOWARDS. ROB WILL ALSO HAVE SOME COMMON GROUP IMAGES AND COMPOSITIONS TO WORK WITH.
